How To Never Be ‘Jobless’ Again

I have experienced job losses many times and it has taught me how to stay relevant in the market.

Being jobless is a scary situation because it is going to disrupt your life. Sometimes it is almost impossible to avoid it from happening. When companies are not doing well, they are forced to lay off employees to save costs from salary and remuneration.

I have learnt that there are ways to stay relevant in the market and minimise the chances of being jobless. It comes down to having the relevant skills, knocking on doors, and making yourself visible.

Here are 4 things you can start doing:

1. Develop the right skills for tomorrow’s economy

There is always room to learn something new and enhance your skills. In order to stay relevant, you need to develop the right skills for tomorrow’s economy.

Enhancing your skill set can set you apart from all the others in your field, which can make you shine in the eyes of employers, as well as the other professionals in the industry.

There are many free courses you can find online to upskill yourself. Be sure to also check out government-funded reskilling and upskilling programs.

2. Build a digital portfolio

Having a digital portfolio, good visibility, and online presence open our resume to employers who want to meet possible employees.

LinkedIn is, by far, the most important networking platform today.

Every job seeker should use it regularly as it allows potential employers to get a glimpse of who you are beyond your resume.

3. Make yourself visible to the public

Establishing an online presence is an important step in building credibility, raising awareness, and increasing visibility. Building your personal brand can open new doors in your career, not only if you are looking to get employed but even if you already have a job and you are looking to grow your career.

It helps you get recognised and remembered by employers and reputable professionals in your industry.

4. Start networking

Networking allows you to interact with more people. You can start reaching out to your friends and ex-colleagues as they may be working with a new employer and they may be able to help you find a new job.

The more you work on networking and connecting with more people, the less time you will need to find a new job.

It is important for every jobseeker to stay relevant with constant learning. Building your network and being visible to potential employers and recruiters is one of the best ways to future-proof your career.
